Barry Ferguson’s provides Rangers 1-0 victory over Accies

By: j | February 28th, 2009

The Rangers seven match unbeaten continued with a 1-0 victory over the Hamilton Accies thanks to Barry Ferguson’s first half goal. With the victory the Gers stay deadlocked with Celtic at the top of the SPL table with sixty points.

As promised Billy Reid’s side put forth a noble effort in an attempt to avenge the 7-1 beating at Ibrox in December. A packed New Douglas Park witnessed a curmudgeonly home side that never relented and fought to the last minute. Walter Smith who was without Pedro Mendes due to a late injury made a surprise decision to hand Maurice Edu and Kyle Lafferty starting duties with the brilliant teen John Fleck resigned to the bench.

The Gers went on the attack from the opening whistle however the Accies young ‘keeper Tomáš Černý was both brilliant and possessed good fortune with the posts. The twenty-three year old Czech is growing by leaps and bounds with each match and displayed good leadership on the pitch whilst keeping angles near picture perfect. After thwarting both Kyle Lafferty and Kenny Millers’ efforts it became quite clear that the Rangers were going to need something special to breach the goal.

Walter Smith’s side finally broke through ten minutes before the break when a poor clearance of a corner provides Barry Ferguson the ball and the skipper, who after getting the ball under control, drives it into the bottom far corner of the net. The Gers continued to attack, fortunate or fate saw Kenny Millers attempt caress the bar before the break. After the restart the young Hamilton ‘keeper continued to frustrate the Rangers, none more than Kris Boyd who was played in alone by Steven Davis on the hour but there was no way though. While the Accies pushed for the equalizer behind the support of their fans it was not to be and the match concluded with a 1-0 victory for the Rangers.

They should have scored more. I’m glad to see Barry break the duck but with the Tims 7-0 they cut our goal difference advatage from 10 to 4. This of course is why , no offense J but, you were wrong to have wanted us to have put on the breaks against Hamilton earlier in the season in the 7-1.

Bease is hurt again I believe.
