Champions League, Were having a laugh!!
By: Del_Boy | September 6th, 2007So it has been drawn, the group stages of the champions league and Rangers look as if they have been drawn in the “group of death”.
Barcelona, Lyon and Stuttgart the champions of France, Germany and the runners up of La Liga all drawn beside them. As a season ticket holder I cant wait to see these team at Ibrox and have already paid my £100 fee for the three games.
In terms of European football for Rangers though, it doesn’t look good……
Barcelona:
Are easily one of the best teams in the world Puyol, Messi, Xavi, Deco, Etoo, Ronaldinho, Iniesta and Henry to name a few of there fantastic players. Being realistic I don’t think Rangers can get any points from either game, but you never know what can happen in football and if we play well and with a little bit of luck we might sneak a draw at home!
Lyon:
As some of you know I am a Lyon fan and was delighted when we were drawn beside them. There team is looking like it is struggling a bit just now but lets not forget they are a fantastic team! With a lot of transfers happening this year the team will take a few weeks to gel and settle and injuries to Talisman keeper Gregory Coupet and captain Cris haven’t helped them at all.
I think that we could beat any team at Ibrox with a bit of luck and I fancy us to get points against Lyon, especially at home.
Stuttgart:
To be honest I don’t really know much about them, except that they won the Bundesliga which if you ask me means that they must be a decent team! They look to me to be strongest in attack but have some good midlfeilders in Hitzelsberger and Basturk. I think that Rangers can beat Stuttgart at home and cause an upset away as well.
All in all Rangers don’t really have much of a chance of qualifying and I think that if we get into the Eufa Cup via 3rd place we have done great!!

To be honest I think Rangers will end up third in this group. They just seem to win at home and that’s what’s going to matter in this group. I think they’ll take a point at home from Lyon and Barcelona and then 3 from Stuttgart. Away form, maybe a point at Stuttgart, which would put them at 6 points from 6 games, which isn’t bad, really.
I definitely don’t “misunderestimate” you guys at all. And I’m severely jealous that you’re going to see my boys play. Jerk.

Yeah, I think third is pretty realistic, but the Gers might just surprise Lyon for second. Cuellar and Weir are a really impressive pair of defenders, and scoring much against them and Allan McGregor will be tough. Still, my money would be on Barcelona-Lyon-Rangers-Stuttgart, which will be disappointing for the German champs, but that’s how I see it going down.

I think Lyon will have difficulty attacking because I suspect Rangers will be playing a defensive game from the outset, and our team suffers in physical play. If Lyon score at Ibrox, it will be due to one of Juninho’s setpieces.
But I also don’t see Rangers scoring against us. Lyon’s defenses are in shambles at the moment, but by the time they play Rangers, Anderson and Squillaci should be near form, and also, I think Lyon’s midfield will be able to break up the offensive movement of the Rangers, who will be forced to rely on long balls, and that Lyon can deal with.

Inara,
I disagree that Rangers will be defensive, maybe away but definately not at Ibrox! We are scoring goals for fun and have been a lot stronger at the back than we have been for years.
I cant see Lyon scoring unless it is from a set piece. And i think taht if we did play the long ball lyon wouldnt cope!
Thr French league is fast and physical as well but i think we would get the better of you.
The only thing taht worrys me is Juni and Benzema(sp) I think we have a better midfeild than Lyon as well. Ferguson, Hemdani, Beasley and Whittaker are solid defensively and strong going forward.
I think the Lyon game will be good to see but i think that Lyon will struggle to score!

woooaw!
did I just read you thought Rangers had a better midfield than Lyon?Lyon’s strongest part of the team is the midfield. It’s where we have no weak links. Ok, Rangers have good midfielders, but they don’t have the same flair as Lyon’s.
Still, I think Lyon will struggle against Rangers. I see us lose in Ibrox. We have to qualify before this game, which means make a good result against Barca (I think we can get 4 points from them).Posted from

Rangers will only draw with stuttgart at home and will probably lose away as for Barcelona and Lyon coming to Ibrox both sides will definately dominate the Ibrox side and come out victorious by a few goals. The away games Rangers fans better save their money because there is no chance that Rangers will upset the odds. 6 points from games as one of the comments said earlier is overestimating the Rangers side at the moment they are severely lacking the killer instinct and cannot play the full 90 minutes the way they should do - it took them the last 20 minutes to kill off Gretna to win 4-0 but most of the goals were scored in the last part of the second half. If they struggle with teams in the SPL then no way will they be able to get points from Lyon and Barcelona Home or Away. My prediction is Rangers will come fourth in the Group with Stuttgart gettin third. Walter Smith has never been a good European Football manager even in his first stint at Rangers and it will not change.

I agree about Smith not being a European manager but the rest of what you say is garbage!
We havent been at home in Europe for ages! Inter Porto Villareal Bayern Munich have all came and been sent away!
Lyon have a good midfeild and i think you will win but it wont be an upset if we beat you at Ibrox!
A lot of people underestimate Scottish Football. Look at the national team beating France twice and Celtic beating Man Utd and nearly beating AC Milan last year.
All i can say is wait and see.
I dont expect anything from Barca, fancy Rangers to Beat Lyon and Stuttgart at home and hopefully sneak a point away.
Although i hope that come Thursday morning i wont be too upset!

Rangers will be playing 4-5-1 for the forseeable future. Hopefully more pace is injected onto the wings for the future CL matches. Whittaker and Adam need to be dropped for Europe in favor of Beasley and McCulloch.

McCUlloch was injured thas why he didnt play and Adam played instead of Beasley to add some muscle to the Midfeild.
Would stick with Whittaker though hes a great player but i would play mcculloch instead of Adam and bring Beasley on from the bench.
And we will only play 4-5-1 in the CL. Great performance and result from us today!
Top of the league!
