leaders do not panic
By: j | July 30th, 2008I’m not much for sugar-coating things and frankly in putting together a review of todays Champions League qualifying match FBK Kaunas is one of the easiest blog entries I could make. I’m going to step outside of my “blogging identity” and venture into my real world (what…the internet isn’t real?) where this sport has been my business.
This was a valuable match with many lessons learned. These lessons can’t be swept aside or cause panic and knee-jerk reactions. The problems are simple starting first with the absence of captain Barry Ferguson and Carlos Cuellar. That isn’t going to change for the second leg and problem one was the lack of leadership on the pitch. A simple shot across the bow would be a good idea (that means in professional terms, if one of you sob’s can’t lead, I can find someone who does). Problem two was that guts of the team was stripped out. FBK Kaunas tackled sharply, they knew they had to out-work the Rangers and they did. Sad but true but a team that outworked competition last season, just got handed a bit of their own medicine. The solution to this starts pretty much with the “discussion” on needing someone to step-up (that means in professional terms, if one of you sob’s aren’t ready to work, I can find someone who does). As far as tactical play while you certainly can’t call the Rangers attack as “inspiring”, there was numerous chances to score but there was either a lack of quality with the final touch or clearing efforts on the goal that robbed both Kenny Miller and Jean-Claude Darcheville of the winning strike. Defensively, while the clean sheet gives you and “obvious” clue, there was only a few serious goal scoring opportunity by the Lithuanians so you have to give strong marks in that area.
This is fairly simple. Prove you want to win and respond in a pressure situation with a level of aggressive that we didn’t see today. It’s the mark of all great leaders and well within your grasp. Leaders don’t panic.

I wouldn’t bet on seeing much attack the next leg. Wattenaccio will be out in full effect. Batten down the hatches, 10 in the back, and hope for the best.

I’m looking forward to this match just to see how they respond to the challenge. Incredible match for Andrius Velicka
