Rangers keep pressure on Celtic with victory over Kilmarnock
By: j | February 21st, 2009
The Rangers kept the pressure on Celtic with 3-1 victory over Kilmarnock. With the three points, the Gers climb to first place and await Celtic’s match against Motherwell.
The Rangers came out with intent and after coming close to grabbing the first goal of the day, were shocked when Jamie Hamill turned in Garry Hay’s cross from close range seventeen minutes after the start. However down by one Walter Smith’s fought back a morsel before the half hour when Pedro Mendes corner was played on by Madjid Bougherra to Kris Boyd who slammed the ball into the net. Four minutes later Kenny Miller erupted with a brace within two minutes, the first finished professionally from a Kris Boyd provision, with the second coming from a Pedro Mendes cross. For the balance of the match Killie was kept at bay and the match ended without further scoring for a 3-1 Rangers victory. Of particular note was Aarón Ñíguez entering for John Fleck and continued to show extraordinary promise and maturity.
Following the match, Walter Smith said of Kenny Miller’s performance:
“It’s nice to see Kenny score goals and he looks confident again.
“He went through a period there where he did not manage to find the net so for any striker it is good get that back.
“You can see in his play that he is now injury free and his movement is excellent.
“I think this week he has taken his four goals very well and the two he got this afternoon came at an important time for the team.
“But apart from his goals Kenny also does a lot of hard work and the players around him appreciate that.
“Hopefully he can now keep that level of performance going.”
The Rangers return to action next Saturday against Hamilton Academical.

TOP OF THE TABLE! Even if it’s only on Goal difference right now the Tims are in a tail spin and we’re on decent form. I’m very confident right now.
