Rangers vs Stuttgart Preview

By: Del_Boy | September 18th, 2007

Its the night before Rangers return to the biggest club competition in the world and after the weekends performance at Hearts we have every reason not to be optimistic.

Rangers suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday as we were beaten 4-2 by Hearts. The scorline flattered Hearts as they scored to goals with the aid of deflections but Rangers were simply not good enough!

With a few players rested after the heroics in Paris, as Scotland beat France 1-0, a rather makeshift team was fielded by Smith.

No Barry Ferguson, Lee McCulloch and Darcheville in the team we started with the great waste of space that is Amdy Faye and Kevin Thomson in the middle.

That for me was what lost us the game. This was Fayes debut for Rangers and an away game to one of the better teams in the league and he was virtually posted missing!

But im not going to talk about the weekend game any more….

Rangers return to Champions League football under the hardest of circumstances. You could hardly have picked a harder group to be in but thankfully the first game is at home and i personally think that it will be a winning start!

I watch a lot of football and have seen Stuttgart play a few times this season and the only thing about there team that has me worried is the pace fo the strkiers!

Cuellar isnt slow but he isnt quick either and Davie Weir is 38 and the less said about that the better!

But i think that we could cause them a few problems with our wingers and our link up play with the front two which has been amazing this season.

It should be a good game and i will be surprised if it finishes 0-0.

Good luck to Celtic as well who are away to Shaktar Donetsk.

We are the People

Stuttgart waited until the past weekend to start playing the style of football that is their strength, think Arsenal with the ability to finish. If they come in with their tactical acumen ablaze, playing triangles and short passes waiting for the time to spring the through ball, they may well dominate this group.

This will be a tough one for Rangers, but let’s face it - none of the matches in this group are exactly cakewalks. Rangers have to be looking to get a point at least out of this match, but you’re right that it will largely depend on the quick strikers of Stuttgart. I’m a big fan of Carlos Cuellar, and I think he can keep up, or at least out-position them, but Weir I’m not sure about. Should be interesting to watch.
