Scottish Cup v St Johnstone match preview
By: j | January 12th, 2009Amongst the turmoil of the Rangers off-loading any number of players, they face St Johnstone in Scottish Cup Tuesday evening. With the temperatures set to plumment, McDiarmid Park will be less than inviting but the home side face their own problems with a series of absences due to injury including Martin Hardie, Peter MacDonald and Liam Craig. Walter Smith heads into the match without Kyle Lafferty and Maurice Edu but otherwise fully-fit.
With an obvious whirlwind of questions regarding what appears to be a fire-sale of their talent, Gers manager Walter Smith said of the match:
“It is no problem for us to focus on the game, that’s what we do.
“A lot of the extra stuff that has been going on may deflect (attention) in some places but certainly not on the footballing side of things.
“The main concentration will be on how we apply ourselves in the game and that application will be a major factor in whether we succeed or not.
“Judging by (St Johnstone’s) league performances this year, they have maybe got something a bit extra this season. They have probably shown an improvement from last season.”
If the Rangers can earn the win they will face Forfar Athletic or Forres Mechanics away in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup.
