Vladimir Romanov fires up FBK Kaunas
By: j | July 28th, 2008Vladimir Romnanov, the controversial owner of Hearts and Lithuanian businessman, in a exclusive interview with the Daily Record, has urged his compatriots FBK Kaunas to defeat the Rangers in this Wednesday’s Champions League qualifying match at Ibrox.
Mr. Romanov, as many know is a proud Soviet-born Lithuanian, who since purchasing Hearts brought in many top-flight players from his homeland. Interestingly enough he owns the Lithuanian bank, ŪKIO Bankas, which is FBK Kaunas chief sponsor (and the holder of virtually all Hearts debt) as well as being majority shareholder in the club and many have said the Kaunas is a feeder-system for Lithuanian players to the Scottish Premier League. In recent years notable Lithuanian players to Hearts have included Bruno Aguiar, Nerijus Barasa, Roman Bednář, Edgaras Jankauskas, Andrius Velička and Marius Žaliūkas.
FBK Kaunas captain Nerijus Radzius noted Mr. Romanov spoke to the squad, urging them to victory.
Nerizius Radzius said: “We have been speaking about the game and Mr Romanov says we will need to be very good to beat Rangers. I think he wants Kaunas to do well in the matches and hopes we play well against them. We will try for him.”
Of course to add just a bit more than a trace, Rangers new addition Andrius Velicka formerly starred at Hearts as well as FBK Kaunas. Andrius is urging Walter Smith to pencil him into the starting grid and is anxious to enact a taste of revenge on his former teammates.
