Walter Smith waits for offers
By: j | December 29th, 2008With the transfer window set to open, the Rangers hopes to add some new blood to the squad is dependent upon unloading a number of players as the club will take a firm stance on maintaining a positive balance with respect to transfers and operating salaries. In addition the financial realities, Walter Smith is keen on paring down the squad a morsel:
“We have too many lads in the group who are not playing and they don’t like that, which means it’s not conducive to having a good squad.”
However, plans might need to be moved to the back-burner as Jean-Claude Darcheville’s move to Valenciennes is the only transfer that is on solid ground. Rumours of Nacho Novo move to Deportivo de La Coruña as well as situations involving Andrius Velicka and Charlie Adam have yet to materialize and could prove to be the undoing of future efforts.

Any news on Rangers shipping DaMarcus Beasley out? I’ve read a lot of speculation but nothing too solid.

Sean-Not to step on j’s toes, but Ives said that there are lots of MLS suitors wanting Beasley, and since he’s not getting starting XI time with Rangers, a move might be a good idea. However, DMB would probably have to take a huge paycut to go to the MLS. If he wants to do that for playing time, I’d expect him to be back stateside come January.

Matt, you’re always welcome to join-in especially now it looks like we’re are back down to only three on the SPL now. You are also correct with the spending notion because I do not expect the Rangers to be very active.
Sean, In addition to Matt’s comments I want to stress that right now a lot of the Rangers situation is rumour and only one situation has been confirmed. They are looking to reduce the size of their squad, overall payroll and maintaining a positive transfer account. I seriously question that the club is not looking to supplement reduced revenue from falling out in European competition as well.

j-I think Rangers are trying to get some revenue with the “high profile” friendly with AC Milan, or at least try and make up some of the money lost by no European travels this year.

Doubt there’s anyone who can really help that we can afford.
