week 1 opponent review Falkirk

By: j | August 7th, 2008

As a general introduction through the course of the campaign, I will review the upcoming opponent and summarize issues of concerns and then follow-up with a second section discussing how the Rangers will approach the match. Given it is the first week of the season, my review is based upon broad generalities of coaching tactics in prior years, observations of pre-season friendlies and player history.

Falkirk manager John Hughes has slowly put together a fine squad, creeping up the table based upon developing quality young local players and a no-frills, disciplined approach. The club will likely continue to rise up the table and make a bid for the important fourth spot, particularly if it can keep higher profile Premier League squads mitts off their youth. Particularly promising are the Scotland U21 trio of Thomas Scobbie, Chris Mitchell and mid-field sensation Scott Arfield. The club has had a bit of issue with dual personalities with defense liabilities on the road being sealed tight at home however the signings of Jackie McNamara and Lee Bullen will go a long way to tightening this issue. The crafty veterans will be of tremendous service to the club and if they can shore up the back line, a hearty climb up the table is not out of the question. For Rangers fans and in consideration of the ‘Gers anemic attack of late this will be an issue. In the attack young Mr. Arfield has shown tremendous creativity on the pitch and has been joined by man Rangers fans will know well, Neil McCann. Captain Darren Barr will lead this squad on with conviction and he knows at home, Falkirk is capable of coming away with points.

Finally stepping outside the realm of a Rangers blog, I’m hopeful that all fans get a chance to watch this match, not simply from a Rangers perspective but in support of Football in Scotland. Whether you’re in Falkirk or have never visited beautiful Scotland before, make time to check out all of the teams of the Scottish Premier League. I know you’ll be happy you did.

I like the closing commentary, J. It’s customary to knock the SPL for being weak competitively, but there is no league I follow more closely, and I look forward to your future scouting reports on all SPL opponents.

Chris – first off, thanks for joining me. I know this might date me but the young men playing in all of the Scottish leagues are some of the best in the world and often exemplify the best parts of the game. I’m please to do this blog not simply to tell people of the Rangers but to tell them about all of fine young men playing Football in Scotland. So do you have a favourite club?

Falkirk came on strong just before the split last year and almost got in the top half. Could be a tough away trip, especially after Tuesday’s events, for the ‘gers.

J – thanks for having me. You might be dismayed to know I’m a Bhoy, but I’m also a fan of Scottish football in general. You, Matt, and myself will have plenty to discuss over the course of the season.

Chris – I seriously appreciate you dropping by, regardless of who you cheer for. As I said, Scottish Football is some of the best in the world but more importantly played by some of best guys you’d ever meet. People might not capture that from the television screen but its a straight-up fact and you won’t find the prawn sandwich crowd here. And I’ll also tell you that I’m doing this blog not simply for the Rangers but to give people some insight into the SPL. I’m going to increase my weekly review to include more on the opponents truthfully because they deserve it.
